Kauto Star (right) won the Betfair Chase by a nose from Imperial Commander at Haydock

Connections for both Kauto Star and Imperial Commander are happy with the condition of their chasers after their epic battle in the Betfair Chase at Haydock last Saturday. Kauto Star won by a nose from Imperial Commander after the lead was traded back and forth between them.

The King George VI Chase could now see a rematch between these two impressive horses. While Kauto Star is almost certain to run in the Grade 1 race on Boxing Day, Imperial Commander’s impressive run at Haydock has meant that he is now a possibility for the King George VI Chase as well.

Kauto Star wins the Betfair Chase by a nose from Imperial Commander

Kauto Star held off a late rally from Imperial Commander to win the Betfair Chase at Haydock, his 12th Grade 1 win.

But Imperial Commander did not make it easy for the Star, rallying late to be neck and neck going to the post. After a tense wait for the judges to look at the photo finish it was determined that Kauto Star had held on by a nose.

Notre Pere to take on Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase

Kauto Star will make his seasonal debut in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock this Saturday in what looks set to be dismal conditions with rain and strong winds expected to lash the track.

Punters are looking at trainer Jim Dreaper’s mud-loving Notre Pere as the horse to take the challenge to Kauto Star, who won the race in 2006 and 2007 but unseated jockey Sam Thomas at the final fence last year to miss out on the hat-trick of wins. Notre Pere is the only Irish horse in the field this year and was the winner of last season’s Welsh Grand National and Punchestown Gold Cup.

Racing Post Chase winner Nacarat will not run in Saturday’s Betfair Chase at Haydock, instead opting to concentrate on the upcoming King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day. Trainer Tom George described the King George Chase as the main priority for the 8 year old grey.

“He’s not going to Haydock. I had a chat with his owner Simon Clarke this morning. The King George is his number one target and we’ve decided to wait for that.” George said.
